Recording "Fight, or assimilate and die!" by Simon Sez OK. So, I don't actually remember those two days all that clearly. It's all kinda lost in a haze of beer, noise, smoke heat, and bad vibes. Only snippets waft through, and even what I do remember, I'm not sure I want to admit to. Mark Butcher rolling up to record parts of Sticky Carpet comes to mind. I'd just like to take this opportunity to thank you publicly on behalf of the band, Mark. Out of all the footage that you shot - my fave parts include Turner's drunken rant against Baseball, Matt, Aunty and Turner's dubious comments about my crotch, Aunty's half-pissed declaration of war against society and Turner's inspiring speech about community - you had to go and use the bit where I get yelled at for asking a dumb question. Anyway, there was a camera in the room and we preened and postured accordingly. The presence of a 'documentary filmaker' had the effect of making us all feel warm and important - or that could've just been the booze. It did help to allay the feeling that nobody would actually give a shit about the damn thing if and when we ever finished it... So a big thanks to all those who sat it out with us. The aforementioned Mark, the ever patient and all knowing fixit man Nao, Lady Daisy, Pete, Kate, and the other people whose names I can't remember or was to drunk to learn. Thanks also to David Briggs, who did a fuckin' great job of mastering the record despite having to deal with the fact that Aunty and I had no idea what the hell he was doing...Kudos is also due to Sarah Blaby for her backroom wheeling and dealing. Listen carefully to the album. The mistakes are all largely still in there. Or mine are anyway. You can actually hear us getting drunker and sloppier as it wears on. We cut it live to tape. Pretty much in one hit. We redid some vocals, laid in a few guitar overdubs, but it was more or less hit it and quit. Out of ten songs recorded, seven made the final cut. In two days, amidst the inebriation, arguments, hangovers, heatstroke, body odour, technical problems and general bullshit - that's not a bad effort. At any rate, we like the record. We put what we had into it. We tried to create something that would appeal to ourselves and others like us. We're happy. Now its up to you to decide. The
Assassination Collective: the story so far... New
Years Day 2005. Whilst coming down, experiencing near-suicidal boredom
at the banality of everyday life, phone conversations takes place
between Liz Turner, Liz Thompson, Joel Morrison, Matt Gleeson, Brendan
Noonan, Zach Von Banburger, and Ben Butcher. The idea is that we will form a
new project. In
January 2005, the band jam at Brunswick’s Irene warehouse/ community
activist space. Zach Von Banburger quits on the spot. Nevertheless, come
March, the band play their first show at a house party in the only
skanky house left in Greville street, Prahran. Three
months later, bassist Brendan Noonan quits midway through a show at the
Pony bar’s seedy 2am slot. The resulting violence leaves Brendan
buried under a toppled bass amp, and leaves the band owing hundreds of
dollars in equipment repairs. After just five gigs, band bookers across
Melbourne are reluctant to book the band. Thus far, the band’s
short-lived career has already earned them a reputation for drunken
orgies, violent relationship break-ups and hospitalisation. The band’s
existence seems precarious at best and, at worst, like the
post-traumatic stress disorder after a bad train wreck. On
the eve of a crucial show at Trades Hall with Singapore hardcore band My
Precious, Joel calls brother Simon Morrison to play bass. One rehearsal
and Simon knows the songs. He stays. The Assassination Collective are
finally a solid unit and continue to wreck havoc throughout Melbourne... Past
